Talents are a kind of innate ability that Players and a few rare NPCs are capable of possessing. Next to Magic, it is one of the two 'powers' in the world of Empyrea. They allow the use of unique skills, which are techniques that fall under them; Players cannot use a skill unless they possess the talent which they fall under. For example: Paladin skills can only be used by Players with the Paladin class talent [Under Divine Flag], and Werebeast skills can only be used by Players with the [Werebeast] race talent.

There is no limit to the number of Talents a Player can possess, and more can be purchased from the site shop. Players generally start with up to two talents- one from their choice of class, and one from their choice of race (if applicable; not all races begin with an additional talent).

Note that talents often do little on their own, and serve only to unlock the potential for the Player to execute special skills. Once a talent is obtained, a Player is granted either one or multiple starting skills to begin with.
Skills are techniques derived from talents. There is no limit to the number of skills per talent a Player can possess, and their applications are typically vast— ranging from augmenting physical prowess to even altering a foe's spatial and temporal awareness. Some skills simply exist for crafting or persuasion.

Unlike regular Magic spells, which can only be cast one at a time— a Player or NPC can use multiple skills at a time to augment just a single, decisive strike.[break][break]
Skills can be both active or passive - if they are passive, their descriptions will say so.
There are no means to obtain additional talents through natural leveling— they must be purchased from the site shop. Players do, however, gain a new skill of their choice from the existing catalogs to fall under any one of their existing talents once every five levels.[break][break]
Rarely, special skills that don't fall under any of the Player's talents but instead fall under a 'special' category can be granted by the game's masters for clearing certain events or participating in limited time content.
Players who have attained level 50+ are able to begin developing their own custom skills for their existing talents unique to their character with staff approval (note that these will be heavily scrutinized). These skills cannot be obtained by or taught to another Player.[break][break]
It is not possible to create custom talents.
