The ocean breeze of Avalon is a welcome contrast to the burning sun—the smell of sea salt bringing with it relief from the heat. Despite the calm tranquillity, M1SSILE could feel the tension in the air. There's a sense of unease in the NPCs, despite them continuing with their programmed day cycle.[break][break]

It all makes sense when he approaches the duelling grounds. There's a chorus of "Please keep moving, nothing to see here" from the guards, but there are just too many of them for nothing. The signposting is anything but subtle as if the arena is screaming come here.[break][break]

By the time he's two steps away from the entrance, a guard roughly pulls him away. "Hey! The arena is closed for today," the guard barks at him. It's stern and gruff in a way typical of trained soldiers.[break][break]

"Woah!" M1SSILE raises both arms in surprise, to signify that he meant no harm, "I'm here to help, I'm an adventurer."[break][break]

"With just you? They'll have my head if I let you in," the guard scoffs and continues pulling him away from the entrance by the back of his collar, "Off you go now."[break][break]

M1SSILE is about to protest when the quest window finally pops up. Something about fighting undead and erasing a rune. His eyes also skim past the level recommendation—as far as he knew, he was near the forefront of in-game strength. Although he was just a measly level 9, the lucky character creation bonus provided a significant enough boost that he's never worried about content difficulty.[break][break]

The only thing he really cares about is the barrier between him and the quest rewards (platinum, and an uncommon piece of equipment)—the minimum party size. Very inconvenient.[break][break]

With no other choice, M1SSILE leans against the cool cobblestone walls of the duelling grounds, tapping on the invite button next to every player under Friends, Recent, and Nearby. [break][break]

It was a comforting balance for those who roamed its streets or scuffled within the arena. Those who found themselves inside remained nonetheless in comfort, however, as the dining options were quite the experience here. At least, that’s what our blue-haired maiden had believed on her decision to travel here. And on her arrival, she saw none the difference.

The NPCs seemed to follow their routines, their voice lines spoken with small wavers that seemed to be a cultural trait here. Everyone seemed to have that same float to their words - it was interesting, but not to the point that she paid it any more mind. She had found herself in a tavern, munching down on some roasted boarish beast’s leg, watching the ins and outs of the business’s midday clientele. A patrol of guards came in and seated themselves at a table nearby, ordering some large meal for the group and their individual drinks. One seemed to fidget.

“I don’t think now’s the best time for a drink, captain.”

“Boy,” the apparent ‘captain’ narrowed his eyes at the one who spoke up, “I’d say this is the best time. I can’t list all the reasons, but at the very least - it keeps some normalcy.”

Their dialogue faded to basic murmurs, as if the game wanted to draw her attention to that exchange and that exchange alone. Yet, Desiderium simply tilted her head at the matter but shook it away. It was of no relevance to her, she determined, and perhaps she was rude for eavesdropping on even that much.

She finished her meal, left a tip for the server, and made her way out the doors, securing her mask to its designated position. It was a solid debate for her as to whether she should pursue the path laid before her. The young guard had smelled very bad. A sickly salt - sweat from some source that she couldn’t quite determine. She could tie it to concern. Worry. The others seemed to silence him without an issue, however. What would cause such an interaction?

Desiderium had caved to the world’s wills, she realized, as she approached the arena. Guards galore all reeked of the same scent as the other, offering the same mantra as she passed by them.

The woman was almost to leave it be. After all, if so many people were saying it was okay - surely it was. Perhaps they all just smelled this bad and maybe it was just another cultural thing. These are the things she reasoned until she received an invite from an unfamiliar name.

The message to follow gave a little more detail. Someone nearby wanted to “bonk” skeletons - whatever that meant. Okay… where were they? She wouldn’t decline it, rather pushing the button to join in. She was met with a quest box now, to which she skimmed through. A level 15 quest for fighting skeletons? Perhaps this was a bad idea, after all; but, if what the other had said before, he would “carry”. She would trust the stranger this time and dismissed the box, moving to track him down. Red hair and the ears of a canine seemed to mark the appropriate player, alongside the crown icon beside his name on her quick inspection. She approached him from the right, moving to stand by his side. She’d look up to meet his eyes and nod her greeting.
